Thanks for the replies!
Rest assured, my computer has been off and upside down for the past 51 hours, and I don't plan on trying to turn it on for at least another 9 hours or so, if not much longer.
My BF suggested the sun/window because he knows I only get sun hitting my window until like 11am - besides, I live in England... it's hardly roasting :P It hasn't actually been sunny since Sunday morning. Right now the computer is alternating between laying keyboard down on a towel with the screen hanging off my desk, and being in an A shape in the airing cupboard. It's safe.
Do any of you know what actually causes a Mac to freeze up like that? In all my 3 years of owning my laptop I've never seen it freeze relentlessly for hours on end. Hmm.

I'm looking for tiger first of all.
Next if anyone has a battery for cheap that will fit in a 17" powerbook I'll take that
And if anyone has 1x1GB PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM for cheap I'll take that too.
Let me know.

These are great replies. Thanks to everyone who gave their thoughts. And a big thanks to r0k for your long and detailed experience. This was the concern I had and I really appreciate you takin the time to warn me.
Also, thanks for telling me about the timemachineditor.app. I definitely would like to reduce my backup frequency.

I use MPEG Streamclip and export as MPEG-4 using the H.264 codec and determine the bit rate (1MB/s is more than enough for 720p footage) and enable "multi-pass".
Or you could use Handbrake and use one of its presets.

Is it plugged in? If you have an external monitor hooked up, it needs to be plugged in, otherwise on battery it will automatically go to sleep.

Alright so I made the mistake of installing lion on my macbook pro and would like to uninstall and restore from my time machine back up. Only trouble is, can I restore from a time machine back up made while was running lion? Or am I going to have to revert back to a point before that? I'll be installing Snow Leopard from an install disc.
I would think not, the lion time machine backups will be backing up lion system files. You would need to use a time machine or clone of the snow leopard since you want to revert back to that OS.

Hi everyone,
My Xcode 4's Organizer window shows that my provision profile should be valid for 10 more days, and yet, when I select iOS Device to test my app, Xcode reports that it cant find any provisioned devices. Does anyone have any idea how I can troubleshoot this problem? (I just installed the provisioning profile today, since my previous one had expired five days ago. I also have Xcode 3 installed in another folder, don't know if that affects anything).
Many thanks for any info.

I did this years ago on a MacPlus with a dialup account but discovered that MacTCP v2.0.6 would reliably crash.
Downgrading to MacTCP 2.0.4 fixed that problem but I never discovered exactly where or why this conflict occurred.

Exactly though. No one is clamouring for Olympic games...and by their own admission aren't playing the ones that have come out recently. But an olympic game with Sonic and Mario in it...that must be better? Just because Sonic and Mario are both in it (if this isn't another April Fool's - right around the corner folks) doesn't mean the development teams will really fully represent both parties. And which Sonic team will it be? The folks that did a 3d Sonic? Which Mario team or Nintendo team? The folks that did Sunshine? What engine is the game running on? Who are the major players? Quote me some real, hard facts about developers, teams, producers, etc to show that this is a done deal before we've even seen gameplay vids.
I'm all for fun games and have liked Olympic games in the past. Remember one that had arm wrestling in it for the NES with mad button tapping action. But how are these folks so infallible (particularly the Sega folks if they are indeed on board) that you can proclaim it great news with so little info?

I would be waiting early in line if I knew the white iphones would be available. I stood in line for the 3G and they sold out about 5 people in front of me. I got there about 6:00am. I'm not sure how the 3Gs launch went.

One way you could do it is just make the slideshow in iphoto, it will be a lot easier. The only downside is you wont be able to edit the music.

BitTorrent programs are the only way to go. All that other stuff is garbage. I like BitTorrent because I'm a music junkie and can't stand the fact that most of the music on networks like Kazaa is encoded by people who have no idea what they're doing. So I use Azureus to get full albums by people who, like myself, know what they're doing with music. Sure, Kazaa and Bearshare and great for computer-illiterates who don't care about good quality music, but I'll take the next step up, thank you.

From a software side, even MacWrite 1 (which came with the original Macintosh in 1984,) runs just fine through "Classic" mode on Mac OS X 10.4 on a Power Macintosh G5.
The harder part is the hardware aspect. I assume, based on your description, that this software controls something via a serial cable. If so, while it SHOULD work fine on any Mac with a built-in serial port, there is a chance that it may not.

Yup. They sure were. Bad ROM/Cache Dimm, EMI Clips that scratch the logic board, the 5200 had a brittle RGB cable, CommSlot cards with no "hook", LC-PDS slot problems, Power Supplies that die or go BANG etc etc....
I'd suggest getting a take apart for it. I've seen plenty of people all but destroy the case trying to get in. :D
Do a Google for:
6200 6300 pdf performa
There is a small grey plug that fits the burner which then slides into a socket inside the chassis. Some burners' SCSI interface isn't aligned the same but I have no way of knowing which will work. Apple predominantly used Panasonic/Matsushita & Sony CDROM drives. You may have trouble with the size of the tray nose. Toast 4 updated to 4.1.3 or Toast 5 updated to 5.2.x should be perfect. Try to get Toast Deluxe (v4) or Toast 5 Titanium as they are full uncrippled versions.
With 72pin RAM they are slow. OS 8 will be horrible. The 5400/6400 improved on that with FPM DIMMs. Update the 7.5.x to 7.5.5.
If at all possible, use DriveSetup 1.7.3 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58303) to re-format the drive. The 5200/6200 used an on-board IDE driver initially and if you use the original DriveSetup, there will be no driver partition on the drive and could have trouble mounting the bare drive in other systems if ever required. A newer IDE drive can assist with the overall speed, but don't go nuts on capacity. 40GB drives work IIRC.
Good luck!
Also, when that performa does wind you up to the point of destruction (I recently turned one down based on the fact they are so terrible) - id go and get a Quadra 700 (or get one in preparation) - as their beautiful machines from that era. Until 2004 or so I used a Quadra 700/7.1 at school in the "music studio" and it worked wonderfully with a very old copy of I believe it was ProTools (v2/v3 maybe - not quite sure).

The main forums and mobile forums are handled by different software using a shared forum database. There are differences in their features and their messages. We've customized some of the features and messages of the main forum software but the mobile forum software is much less flexible so we can't get them to match as closely as we'd like.
