I had to hit the restore button, then it finally showed that there was the 1.2 update. all is well for me now, search functions, games, and downloading a movie now to test.

    - the games look incredible, mini-golf is really addicting!

I can find everything except the advanced search function. Can you find that on your old 5G iPod? I can't for the life of me.

(Otherwise, I see all the functions -- games work, the quick scrolling where the big letter is displayed works, haven't tried gapless playback though but I'm assuming that works.)

    The symptoms have changed, slightly.

I finally got my hands on a different battery, a fresh one, put it in the computer and the light rings lit up yellow and the computer started charging, so it is, apparently capable of charging a battery as long as it sees it.

But... when it reached full charge, instead of turning green, the light shut off.

I swapped out battery again, and yellow light came on, it charged up, but this time, it stays yellow even when the battery is fully charged.

So... it appears to be something with the AC light ring circuit. Since the computer is controlling that (it behaves the same with different power cords, so it's not the power cord), is the light ring control circuit on the DC-in power jack circuit board? Or is it elsewhere?

I thought this feature was always available. Guess I don't have too much use for it until I think about it. Strange that it just appeared without an update.

On the topic of photo storage and editing, I ran across this blog post in an app on my iPad called Photoverse. It details how to use star ratings to thin out a shoot without dumping any photos.

Chase Jarvis Photo Editing 101 (http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2011/03/photo-editing-101/)

    Dale

Thanks for sharing this app Dale! I have a lot of research to do! :)

ok 100Teraflops I use a Mac Pro daily for Music and Photography, The Mac Pro is a good beastie but alone it cant do the job, it must be paired up to a good Monitor, IPS panel if possible, I did use apple's but found the Dell's re-produced colour better. When you purchase your DSLR will you shoot RAW or Jpeg, think about it, RAW may be bigger files, but you can keep producing a good quality image from just 1 RAW file, On the subject of a scratch disk try and dedicate a complete disk as scratch.
my MP is set up as follows,
    bay 1 :500gb for OS & apps
bay 2 :320gb as Scratch Disk
    bays 3 & 4 : both have 1tb hdd's in a raid 1 configuration for music and stuff
All my RAW files & Aperture library are on a WD my book studio 4TB edition in a raid 1 via fw800 giving me 2TB to use, The system is simple and it works well. the big hdd's are all green WD drives. Hdd's are cheap now, but get the biggest you can afford (don't buy at the apple store), I find using Raid 1 I spend less time now backing up. The hardest part of photography is deleting images, you may take 100 shots and find only 2 of them are keepers, but getting rid of blurry, out of focus files will free up a lot of space,
you have had some excellent advice on here so far, and it will be nice to hear how you finally set up your workflow, keep us posted :)

Thanks for recommending the specs of a quality monitor. Your Mac Pro HDD configuration is simple and easy to understand. Are you using striping from OS X or did you set you RAID 1 with only two drives? I agree that it is very hard deleting photos, as I do not delete photos after I take them. I wait a few days or longer, and then decide if they are keepers. However, I take photos of my family etc and occasionally automobiles and landscape. Also, you are right that I have received excellent advice from the forum members. You folks rule! :)

I will keep you all posted. I am thinking that I should buy a Mac Pro soon! From what I have read on this forum, a new Mac Pro is not expected until 4Q 2011 or 2012. I do not want to wait that long for a stupid processor chipset. :D A few months is optimal, but 6-8 is not feasible. Thanks again for sharing knowledge and swapping ideas!

    Hello there!

I set up a mac mini server for my little company a few months ago and I find it to be overkill for the simple tasks I use it for. Originally I planned to setup a web hosting service, an email server and a wiki but our needs didn't grow as I expected and we found simpler alternatives.

Anyway, I am now thinking about selling it but I was wondering if it was simple to transfer the Mac OS X Server license. I can't seem to find info online on how to do this and I don't want to sell a product which won't easily be usable.

    Any tips on doing this?

    Thanks!

Just the SLS license, not the mini itself?

Most people will tell you that you can not. I'm not sure that is correct. Per your license agreement the disks that came with your mini can not be transferred, unless it goes with the actual mini. However, and I am not a lawyer or anything, I have not see anything that specifically says you can not transfer the SLS license. Of course, I really didn't look that hard, and the buyer would need their own media.

Nice -- i think this MBP 1,1 in question was bought used (through macofalltrades) but was once under applecare as well. I think that might tip the scales in his favor a bit as well.

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but this is most likely for cameras that either have GPS integrated already (and some do) or for cameras like the Nikon D200 or D2X that have a port on the side specifically for hooking up a GPS device like this one:
    http://www.redhensystems.com/products/video_collection_hardware/d2x-gps.asp

Since the EXIF standard contains a flag for GPS-data, they just didn't finish the feature yet. They will.

So no, the iPhone isn't going to be a gps camera pda music playing satellite radio streaming HDTV. Get over it. The iPhone already came out, and flopped (how many ROKRs do you see?) My guess is that if Apple really wants to move into that space, they're going to have to serriously look at their market, and their network partner.

Though Cingular has more users, Verizon and Sprint both have the high-speed data networks capable of integrating a phone with iTunes. Cingular simply doesn't. Verizon users spend, on average, more on downloads than any other non-MVNO provider.

Oh, and as for GPS already being in phones, it's there. Every phone sold after 01/01/04 had to have a GPS tracking device installed for use in Emergency situations. Providers were given six years to get a 95% adoption rate. Ever notice that little crosshair in the top? That means you've got a GPS lock. With SiRF-III GPS chips, you can be pretty well underground and still get a signal, esp. when it's repeated by your cell towers.

This isn't an iPhone clue. Get over yourselves.

Using GSP and Iphoto only makes sense if the photo's have the GSP location information as part of the photo. So that mean that the Camera taking the picture has a GSP reciever in it, which is great outside, but GPS does not work indoors

One way to avoid this (The cause still being unknown, though) is to uncheck the box in iTunes that says "Sync Music Automatically", then just drag the playlists you want up to your iPhone in the sidebar.

Tried it and hated it. I'll keep with MX 2004 until they release an update to speed things up. Of course, I never have been one to work well with new versions. I just upgraded to Tiger today :D

Is this app safe to uninstall by just deleting the folder? The installation thing makes me wary of just trashing it, for there may be other files somewhere...

Is your sound volume muted or low?
    - or -
System Preferences -> Network -> Show: Internal Modem -> Modem tab -> Sound: On
Checked this setting. It's checked next to "On". I even unchecked it and then checked it again. Nothing.

Say what you will about the Zune - I had one 5 years ago and it did something mindblowingly advanced that the iPod/iPhone/iPad still cannot do - wireless sync.

I'm talking about the samsung 10.1 and 8.9 that was revamped due to the iPad 2. That makes the xoom the biggest tab in the game. The wifi version was already being released and most likely made, so they had to ship them. I wouldn't doubt a xoom 2 being announced by end of summer.

If I mention 10.1 and 8.9 and you relate that to an iPad, with all the talk of the new sam tabs, you obviously have no clue what's going on, but I digress.

Huh? "revamped" because of the iPad? I'm fairly sure Apple didn't invent widescreen cinema 16:9 or 16:10, you know, the STANDARD in screen sizes for movies? I love how you try to give apple credit for it tho.

    Hi,
Ok, i know this site is by it's nature about gadgets, but for me it's all about the carrier.
I've had 8 different carriers in the last 10 years. Many of them have merged/
    changed names/gone out of business.
When i see people complaining about their carrier, it's always about coverage
dropouts. Folks, ALL carriers will have SOME dropouts, especially if you live
    in a challenging physical terrain.
What i found more aggravating is how obtuse and unresponsive these companies are. This is an area of modern commerce that is barely regulated.
Politicians have been lobbied to allow a wild west mentality for an industry
that has insinuated itself into most of our lives in just a short time.
I've had carriers routinely sneak in extra charges. Representatives have no
compunction about lying. I don't know about you, but i don't have time to
audit my bill every month with a magnifying glass.
Each carrier was worse than the last. The most annoying thing? Being
put on hold for 40 minutes, than disconnected. This is intentional. They don't want to be accessible.
Finally the last time i switched i did a search to see which companies had the least complaints. Although the billing practices overall in the industry
are atrocious, i've had the best experience overall with my current carrier.
This trumps any pleasure i would get from having a phone that integrates
    well with my macs.

The only thing worse than crappy cell phone companies would be someone that thinks the government could make it better. What motivation does the govt have to make cell phone compainies better? Votes. That's it. Votes. The only motivation that government has. So they'll promise you that they'll make it better. You'll vote for them. They'll spend money regulating whatever you think needs regulating. They'll create a branch that costs some upzillion dollars. Cell phone companies will be forced to comply with some ridiculous something or other. They'll up your bill by placing a charge on it called the "rsoo tax" to pay for it. The cell phone companies will all still treat you badly. Vote with your feet. Keep switching carriers. Don't blow your cash on idiotic features for idiotic prices. The companies will comply and compete for your business.

One of the things that irritates me about iTMS is the fact that I can't play my purchased tracks on anything other than an iPod.
You can, with limitations. If you burn to CD, then rip to a lossless format, you can put an exact copy on anything. Right now the resulting larger files really do present a problem when moving to other players (unless you're willing to accept recompression losses), but time will erase this as storage density goes up and prices drop.

For example, the current high-end iPod can already hold more uncompressed audio than the original could hold in the iTMS compressed form, yet the newer model costs a little less.

Anyone else know why the scroll bar in the diagram is on the left? Should'nt it be on the right hand side of the screen?

Obfuscation. Patent drawings aren't usually drawings, in order to make it difficult to reproduce.

As for other things to add. Some sort of orientation sensor so that the image changed from landscape to portrait as its rotated. Text to speech for books, or at the very least build it into itunes.

I like the idea of being able to sync the metadata back and forth. I try to rate all of my songs so that I can shuffle through the ones that I like and don't have to listen to the ones I couldn't bring myself to delete.
